Toyota acquired Fuji International Speedway in 2000 and took part in Formula One racing starting in 2002. The Japanese Grand Prix was held at the circuit in 2007 and 2008. Toyota spent a huge sum to prepare for these races, including renovating the race track and facilities, but its returns on the investment were lower than expected.
This year, the Japanese Grand Prix will be held at the Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture, which is operated by the Honda Motor Co. (TSE:7267) group. There have been discussions of hosting the Japanese race at the two circuits on alternate years starting next year, but Toyota's withdrawal means the races in Japan will only be held at the Suzuka Circuit.
