PMA Capital Corp. Leads Wednesday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 1.42%

OLDWICK, N.J., Jul 02, 2009 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- PMACA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Wednesday, July 1, at 669.48 (+1.42%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, 14 rose and one declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were PMA Capital Corp. (+11.87%) and Hallmark Financial Services (+11.19%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were AIG (-22.07%) and InsWeb (-9.04%).

The European Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 696.06 (+2.76%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Old Mutual plc (+6.13%) and Aegon N.V. (+4.04%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Novae Group PLC (-2.74%) and Mapfre S.A. (-1.12%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1024.18 (+0.27%). Leading the AMBAP were Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Co. Ltd. (+6.92%) and Dongbu Insurance Co. (+5.53%). Trailing the AMBAP were Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (-2.22%) and Sompo Japan Insurance (-2.01%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 799.24 (+1.56%). Leading the AMBGR were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+7.77%) and XL Capital (+6.98%). Trailing the AMBGR were Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (-2.22%) and Mapfre S.A. (-1.12%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 864.21 (+0.91%). Leading the AMBGB were National Financial Partners (+2.19%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (+1.14%). Trailing the AMBGB were InsWeb (-9.04%) and DCAP Group Inc. (-4.46%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 483.26 (+2.59%). Leading the AMBGML were Horace Mann Educators (+4.81%) and Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (+3.68%). Trailing the AMBGML were AIG (-22.07%) and Assurant (-0.12%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 913.71 (+0.89%). Leading the AMBGNL were PMA Capital Corp. (+11.87%) and Hallmark Financial Services (+11.19%). Trailing the AMBGNL were 21st Century Holding Co. (-5.28%) and Novae Group plc (-2.74%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 617.23 (+1.35%). Leading the AMBGL were Independence Holding Co. (+7.70%) and Old Mutual plc (+6.13%). Trailing the AMBGL were Genworth Financial (-2.15%) and MetLife (-0.83%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 917.29 (+1.13%). Leading the AMBUPC were PMA Capital Corp. (+11.87%) and Hallmark Financial Services (+11.19%). Trailing the AMBUPC were 21st Century Holding Co. (-5.28%) and CRM Holdings (-1.65%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 138.62 (-0.22%). Leading the AMBUML were Horace Mann Educators (+4.81%) and American Financial Group (+3.10%). Trailing the AMBUML were AIG (-22.07%) and Assurant (-0.12%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 634.14 (+0.88%). Leading the AMBUL were Independence Holding Co. (+7.70%) and Presidential Life Corp. (+7.13%). Trailing the AMBUL were Genworth Financial (-2.15%) and MetLife (-0.83%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 682.86 (+0.94%). Leading the AMBULH were Independence Holding Co. (+7.70%) and Presidential Life Corp. (+7.13%). Trailing the AMBULH were Genworth Financial (-2.15%) and MetLife (-0.83%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 733.97 (+1.01%). Leading the AMBUH were HealthSpring (+5.43%) and United American Healthcare (+4.85%). Trailing the AMBUH were Aflac Inc. (+0.58%) and WellPoint (+0.71%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 830.55 (+0.00%). Leading the AMBUB were National Financial Partners (+2.19%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (+1.14%). Trailing the AMBUB were InsWeb (-9.04%) and DCAP Group Inc. (-4.46%).
