Since 2002, she was vice president and divisional merchandise manager of Wal-Mart's fine jewelry and watch division. Mortensen's previous retail jewelry business experience includes positions with Service Merchandise and Bailey Banks & Biddle when it was a division of Irving-based Zale Corp.
She started her career in 1977 as a buyer for Sanger-Harris department store in Dallas.
