A police officer spotted Ryan Casey, 21, climbing over a fence behind Curley's diner Thursday evening, police spokesman Lt. Sean Cooney said.
When police officer Frank Forbes confronted the alleged fee dodger, Casey pushed the officer on the chest with both hands, according to a police statement. A struggle ensued and a nearby EMS paramedic came to the officer's aid. The officer and emergency worker subdued Casey and took him into custody. Neither man was injured.
Casey was charged with assault of a police officer and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on $10,000 bond and is to appear in court July 16.
Later Thursday night, police discovered a discarded gun after breaking up a group of teenagers and young adults gathered in the Rogers School parking lot.
Police responded after neighbors complained of a large group making noise in the lot shortly after midnight. They found a group of nine youths, ranging in age from 17 to 22, according to the statement. Officers saw one young man toss something behind a parked car as they approached. It turned out to be a .22 caliber pistol wrapped in a sock.
All nine individuals were arrested for third-degree criminal trespass. The man who police said tossed the gun, Chordale Booker, 18,
of Stamford, was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit and possession of a firearm on school grounds.
Police searched Booker's car and found a 9mm gun reported stolen from Bridgeport. Booker also was carrying three bags of heroin-laced marijuana on his person, police said. He received five other counts for drug charges. He is being held on $150,000 bond and has a court date of July 16.
Police also responded to three daytime burglaries Thursday.
A woman who returned to her Lockwood Avenue apartment around 9 p.m. discovered $12,000 worth of jewelry stolen, according to police. Among the items missing were three watches, a half dozen bracelets with diamonds, and necklaces.
Police did not find obvious signs of forced entry, but the woman said she found her door ajar, she said.
On Stamford Avenue, a burglar swiped two laptop computers, a digital camera and jewelry, according to police. The burglar appeared to have entered through a sliding door in the back of the house. The burglary took place between noon and 6 p.m.
And on Weed Avenue, a burglar appeared to have entered a bathroom window, snatching jewelry, a watch, credit cars and the resident's car keys. Police believe the burglary occurred between morning and 3:30 p.m.
