Kash Shaikh, a spokesman of Procter & Gamble, said that the new detergent, which costs 20% less than regular Tide, will be tested in approximately 100 Wal-Mart and Kroger stores in southern US.
Mr Shaikh added that Tide Basic is aimed at households that have not been using Tide, apart from the existing customers who want a lower price.
According to media reports, Tide Basic will have yellow packaging, unlike Tide's signature orange, and will be available only as a powder and not in liquid form.
