June McClain, vice president for academic affairs, said 200 new students have applied and more are expected to register before classes begin on July 20 at Golden Isles Career Academy, 4404 Glynco Parkway.
Altamaha Technical, which operates campuses in Jesup, Baxley, Hazlehurst and Ludowici, officially became the technical education provider for Glynn, McIntosh and Camden counties earlier this year, taking the responsibility from the College of Coastal Georgia after the Brunswick college gained four-year status.
The 600 students formerly enrolled in the technical programs at the Coastal Georgia transferred after the semester to Altamaha Technical, which operates year-round academic quarters.
On Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., new students who have applied to the technical college will register for classes in 16 program areas and build a schedule with the help of academic advisors.
The program areas include the fields of business, industrial trades and human services.
McClain said it is unclear at this point what course study will be the most popular.
She said officials will have a better gauge of student interest after Tuesday's registration.
"Right now, we want to let people know we're here to help our students reach their educational goals and acquire workforce skills," McClain said.
Students who have not yet applied are encouraged to visit the school on registration day. McClain said staff will be on hand to assist students in the college application and financial aid processes, including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship.
When summer classes begin, Altamaha Technical will be the first education partner to use the $18.5 million career academy.
Glynn County high school students will begin classes there Aug. 6
Altamaha Technical College will hold day and night classes at the career academy, though day classes may include dual enrollment students from high schools.
Although there is currently no facility to support actual behind-the-wheel training, basic courses in commercial truck driving will begin on July 27.
Altamaha Technical College has received $14 million in funding from the state to help design and construct a classroom building and truck driving range adjacent to the career academy, which will tie in with the commercial driver's license facility.
In addition to technical programs, Altamaha Technical has also assumed responsibility for the adult education and literacy programs, which it already handles in Wayne, Jeff Davis, Long and Appling counties.
