"It's real similar to the 2007 record year of 2,300," said Race Director Mike Regan. "We could potentially beat our record." Regan said 1,900 entrants -- 1,100 for the 8K and 800 for the 5K -- had registered before Friday's packet pickup. He anticipated 500 would sign up Friday and today before the race, predicting the 8K field to increase to 1,300 and the 5K to 1,100.
The event has rebounded nicely after being forced to change its date and location last year when the Cedar River flooded downtown Cedar Rapids.
"The turnout is better than I expected," Regan said. "We've always had a lot of support for this race. A lot of returning runners. It appears everyone is embracing this event." New features include separate start times for the 8K and 5K races, chip timing and a team compe tition.
Regan said people say they like the start time changes. The 8K begins the event at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5K run/walk at 8 a.m. A youth mile run and a kids' fun run will be held at 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively.
Regan said runners will need to wear the timing chips that match their race numbers for times to be accurately recorded.
"Our focus is to put on a good 8K and 5K start, put on good races," he said. "We're just hoping for great weather. We're ready to put on some great races for every body."
