Williamson just shy of making U.S. Senior Open

Paul Williamson of Holmen came ever so close to qualifying for the United States Golf Association U.S. Senior Open last week.

Williamson tied PGA professional Kevin Marion of Lake Forest, Ill., with a 2-over-par 72 at Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon, Wis.

Unfortunately, two pros secured the only qualifying spots.

Chip Beck, a PGA Tour pro from Lake Forest, Ill., set the pace with a 70. Jim Sobb, a pro from Barrington, Ill., grabbed the other spot with 71. Marion is the first alternate. Williamson is the second alternate.

DE BOER PLAYING WELL: Williamson isn't the only Coulee Region player playing well.

James DeBoer, from Holmen High School, shared the top spot in the Wisconsin PGA Juniors Tour event No. 3 at The Legend at Bergamont in Oregon, Wis.

DeBoer, who helped lead Holmen to the WIAA Division 1 state golf meet this spring, finished in a three-way tie at 2-under-par 70 to grab a spot in the Tour Championship. VINGER WINS JUNIORS EVENT: And then there is Landon Vinger of Viola, Wis.

Vinger also made a name for himself by outlasting 74 other golfers for medalist honors in the State PGA Juniors Tour No. 14 event at The Meadows of Six Mile Creek in Waunakee, Wis. Vinger shot an even-par 72 and then won in a playoff to earn the top spot.

Vinger also won the 16-18 age division.

FATLAWNS.COM OPEN: There's a new tournament coming to the area: the Fatlawns.com Open at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek in Onalaska.

The two-day, men's and women's 36-hole two-person best-ball tournament is expected to attract several top players. The field is limited to the first 50 teams to enter.
