The eco friendly structural building solution has been designed to allow for the crossing of M-1 Abrams tanks.
A M-1 Abrams tank, which weighs over 70 tons, is too heavy to drive across most standard bridges and roadways. However, Axion's composite technology allowed the tank to make multiple crossings over a bridge made entirely from recycled consumer and industrial plastics.
The event took place on June 11, as a crowd of approximately 30 engineers and military personnel watched a M-1 Abrams tank cross one of the plastic composite bridges at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The new bridges were less expensive to build than the wood timber bridges they replaced and were engineered to carry the necessary 70-plus tons of military hardware. Attendees included officials from the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Department of Defense.
"This represents a truly historic event for both structural engineers and environmentally conscious individuals across the nation," said James Kerstein, Chief Executive Officer. "Not only are these bridges able to support the weight of a M-1 Abrams tank, they are less expensive to build than wooden, concrete, or steel bridges and are designed using higher quality 100 percent recycled structural solutions in a manner that is nearly maintenance-free and eco-friendly.
Axion International is a structural solution provider o alternative infrastructure and building products. The Company's "green" proprietary technologies allow for the development and manufacture of structural products made from 100 percent recycled consumer and industrial plastics.
