The drugmaker will spend slightly more than 100 billion yen (US$1 billion) on the facility, which is expected to go into operation next fiscal year.
Its Osaka lab has about 1,000 researchers, mainly in chemical synthesis and other conventional areas, while its facility in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, employs about 200 dealing primarily with genetic and other advanced technologies.
Consolidating staff into the new location will help Takeda fuse conventional and new capabilities in order to discover or create substances that go into new drugs.
The Fujisaka lab will be built on 250,000 sq. meters of land on a former Takeda factory site.
Takeda is still discussing how it plans to use the Osaka and Ibaraki labs after researchers move out of them.
