Located in downtown Shanghai, the school covers three floors and 4,740 sq . meters. It cost 200 million yen (US$2.1 million) to build.
Classrooms feature a selection of 120 instruments, including pianos, guitars and horns. There is a concert hall with a capacity for 100 people. Classes will be held to train technicians in such areas as tuning pianos and wind instruments. Instrument sales will begin next month.
Back in 2005, Yamaha opened a music school here to break into the Chinese market. It now has directly operated schools in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, for a total of 15 locations and 3,000 students.
"We're bracing for red ink at the moment, but we want to use this school to increase the music-playing population of China," says Masaaki Koshiba, a Yamaha executive officer.
