NuStar received ILTA's top safety award at the ILTA national conference in Houston. The Platinum Safety Award is given annually to one large company (more than 100 employees) and one small company (less than 100 employees). The award nominees and winners are selected from a judging committee consisting of terminal company representatives.
NuStar received the honor based on its record safety performance in 2008. The company's total recordable injury rate (TRIR), which is based on the number of recordable injuries that occur per 100,000 man hours worked, improved by 44 percent, going from 1.36 in 2007 to 0.76 last year. TRIR averages for the pipeline, terminal and refining industries are all tracked separately, but to put NuStar's TRIR in perspective, the pipeline industry average is 2.6, the terminal industry average is 5.6, and the refining industry average is 1.4.
"We're certainly proud of this honor and excited to be recognized by our peers," said NuStar President and CEO Curt Anastasio. "But we're especially proud of our employees' continued commitment and dedication to safety."
On the heels of the ILTA award, NuStar's U.S. and international regions combined to win a record 19 national safety awards from the National Safety Council. These included the Occupational Excellence Award, which recognizes organizations that have no more than half of the industry average of reported injuries and illnesses that involved days away from work, and have had no fatalities during a calendar year; the Perfect Record Award, which recognizes organizations that have completed at least 12 consecutive months without incurring an occupational injury or illness that resulted in days away from work; Million Work Hours Award, which recognizes organizations that have accomplished 1 million, 2 million, 3 million or any other increment of a million consecutive man-hours without incurring an occupational injury or illness that resulted in days away from work; and the Safety Leadership Award, which recognizes organizations that have achieved five consecutive "Perfect Record" years (operating for at least 60 consecutive months without incurring an occupational injury or illness resulting in days away from work).
"Safety is our top priority at NuStar, and our employees have proven that true by always putting safety first," Anastasio added. "We know that the ultimate reward is a workplace with zero injuries, so we stay vigilant in that effort every day. And while 2008 was a record year for us in terms of safety, we're proud that we're on track to have an even better year in 2009."
