In October 2008, e-commerce platform Alibaba Group appointed Dr. Wang Jian, former assistant managing director of Microsoft Research Asia, as its chief software architect. Another position of Mr. Wang is said to be head of Alibaba Group's research institute, which has not announced its exact function by far.
Besides, Kunxun.cn's founder Tony Chen and Xunlei.com's former core technician Lin Hao are reportedly responsible for Alibaba's development of online search technologies at the research institute.
However, analysts believe that the e-commerce firm was likely to establish a vertical search engine, while Tencent Holdings, the valued added services provider, might build a general one.
In fact, Tencent Holdings has long been active in the research of online search technology, in the run-up to the termination of its cooperation with Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), insiders said.
