LYNDEN, Jul 09, 2009 (The Bellingham Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NCBH | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Inspired to help those in need, the congregation of North County Christ the King Church is putting their faith into action by holding a sale Saturday, July 11, to raise money for two projects.

The "Revolutionary Faith in Action Sale" will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church's parking lot, 1816 18th St. in Lynden.

The idea was fueled by a six-week sermon series with roots in a book called "The Hole in Our Gospel: What Does God Expect of Us," by Richard Stearns, president of World Vision, the international Christian humanitarian organization. In that book, Stearns ponders why Christians aren't serving the world's poor and grappling with the causes of poverty and injustice.

"Forty percent of the world lives on less than $2 a day," said Catherine Theriault, director of Life Changers for North County Christ the King.

So they're trying to raise money through a sale that's open to the public. Just don't call it a garage sale.

"It's not a garage sale. We're not asking people (the congregation) to bring their leftover stuff or their junk. We're asking people to bring the best of what they have to give it up, to sacrifice something," she said.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to dig a well for clean water at an orphanage in the village of Marose, Haiti. That well will serve the orphanage of 35 children, a school where 225 children from the village come every day, and a medical clinic, Theriault said.

The well-drilling effort also is a project of New Generation Ministries and Starfish Ministries, both of Lynden. Drilling the well will cost about $4,000.

Sale proceeds also will go to the faith-based Whatcom County Pregnancy Clinic in Bellingham.
