Donald Henson, an absentee owner of property at 1730 Sandy Creek, asked council to reduce the cost of the lien against his property and for permission to place a mobile home on the property.
Recreation and Parks Director Randy McFarlin said the city of Ada removed a mobile home several years ago from the property. The home was falling apart at the time.
"He was well aware of what he needed to do," McFarlin said about the removal. "It was in very bad shape for a long time."
The city declared the building dilapidated and a nuisance and removed it from the property. Because the city had to do the work, a lien was placed against the property. According to City Manager David Hathcoat, the amount Henson owes is rising because Pontotoc County assesses fees if the lien is not paid in a certain amount of time.
"Our recommendation is we do not bend on this," McFarlin said.
Mayor Roger Cupps said because the city did the work, the city should get the money.
"And I definitely do not want a mobile home in city limits," Cupps said. Councilman Darrell Nemecek said mobile homes are not allowed inside city limits, referring to an ordinance preventing placing one in the city.
Council unanimously denied the request.
In other business, council approved several agenda items required to apply for a Community Development Block Grant.
City Engineer Cody Holcomb said the grant is for $88,923 and would be used to repair components at the wastewater treatment plant. Because the grant was approved due to the city's low to moderate income population, the community is allowed to express opinions on how the money is spent.
One meeting was Monday evening. Another public hearing will occur before the project commences. Holcomb said there will be a seven to 10 day notice.
Holcomb told council bids for polycarts have been received.
"We are in process of reviewing proposals," he said. He plans to have a workshop the first part of August to review the bids and better understand the process.
Fire Chief Marion Harris said work should be completed at Fire Station No. 2 in about four to five weeks. Painting needs to be done and to do so, the painters asked for air conditioning due to the heat. Harris said once electricity was going for the air conditioner, painting and cleaning should be completed in a matter of weeks.
To conclude the meeting, Hathcoat announced Ada was named Tree City U.S.A. for the 15th year and McFarlin reminded council and the public Kiwanis will be doing a fireworks display Friday at 9 p.m. at Wintersmith.
