AIG Leads Friday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 1.13%

OLDWICK, N.J., Jul 13, 2009 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- IHC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Friday, July 10, at 619.67 (-1.13%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, one rose and 14 declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were AIG (+23.84%) and Phoenix Cos. (+8.39%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Independence Holding Co. (-5.95%) and Catlin Group (-5.25%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the European Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 615.07 (-2.19%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Lancashire (+0.73%) and Brit Insurance Holdings (+0.28%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Catlin Group (-5.25%) and Aviva (-4.90%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 995.71 (+0.26%). Leading the AMBAP were China Insurance International Holdings (+4.30%) and Aioi Insurance Co. Ltd. (+3.07%). Trailing the AMBAP were Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance (-3.26%) and Fuji Fire & Marine Insurance (-2.68%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 744.07 (-1.07%). Leading the AMBGR were China Insurance International Holdings (+4.30%) and Montpelier Re Holdings (+2.42%). Trailing the AMBGR were Catlin Group (-5.25%) and Aegon N.V. (-4.42%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 819.81 (-0.50%). Leading the AMBGB were AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (0.00%) and DCAP Group Inc. (0.00%). Trailing the AMBGB were InsWeb (-3.70%) and Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group PLC (-2.31%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 870.57 (-0.55%). Leading the AMBUPC were National Interstate Corp. (+4.55%) and Eastern Insurance Holdings (+2.90%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Gainsco (-4.52%) and Universal Insurance Holdings (-3.97%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 125.46 (-0.16%). Leading the AMBUML were AIG (+23.84%) and American National Insurance (+0.29%). Trailing the AMBUML were Hartford Financial Services Group (-2.23%) and Assurant (-2.14%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 575.25 (-1.66%). Leading the AMBUL were Phoenix Cos. (+8.39%) and Kansas City Life Insurance (+1.30%). Trailing the AMBUL were Independence Holding Co. (-5.95%) and Genworth Financial (-4.97%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 638.75 (-1.32%). Leading the AMBULH were Phoenix Cos. (+8.39%) and Kansas City Life Insurance (+1.30%). Trailing the AMBULH were Independence Holding Co. (-5.95%) and Genworth Financial (-4.97%).
