Bailey has published his first novel, "Heavy Handed," a serial-killer thriller set in Aiken. Released by Eloquent Books in hardback with a cover price of $29.50, the murder mystery is available online at amazon.com, booksamillion.com, barnesandnoble.com and eloquentbooks.com.
"This is my first book. I started it two and a half years ago; it took about a year to write and another year and a half to get it published and delivered," Bailey said. "I had read a book and said, 'I can write a better book than that.' So I got to talking it over with my wife and decided to try it."
Bailey, a lieutenant with Wackenhut at the Savannah River Site, said he set the novel in Aiken because, as a resident of Aiken County for more than 20 years, he loves the community. Locals will recognize streets and places, he said, but all characters are purely fictional. He emphasized that within the limitations of the subject matter, the book is as clean in language and imagery as he could make it.
"I tried to write like people really speak. There's very little fluff and filler in it; it's just all story," he said.
Bailey said he learned a great deal in the more than two years from starting the novel to the day he held the first copy in his hands -- it arrived Monday, July 6. The experience should serve him well as he embarks on his second book.
"I am super-pleased with it now that it's here. I've had about 15 local people read it and give me feedback and criticism, and it's been very encouraging. It's what made me decide to try to publish it," he said. "I've learned tons of stuff from the time I went looking to get it in print. You go through agents, acquisitions, contracts, editors, art, cover design, book design, purchasing -- I didn't know about any of that."
Bailey had the design idea for the cover for "Heavy Handed," and the artwork was done by local artist Ryan Burkett.
"I've started on a second book I haven't finished yet," Bailey said. "It's a sort of sequel -- a different plot, but some of the same characters. I think I'm going to try to sell this one, too, if it works."
