SmarTrend(R) News Watch: U.S. Jobless Claims Fall by 47,000 Last Week

PowerRating -- The U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday that jobless claims fell from 565,000 in the prior week, to 522,000 in the week ended July 11. The figure was much lower than economists' expectations of 575,000 claims. The total number of Americans continuing to receive unemployment benefits fell to 6.273 million from 6.883 million in the previous week. Economists had been expecting an decrease to 6.800 million. S&P futures are trading lower this morning, with the S&P tracking stock (AMEX:SPY) down 0.15% in pre-market trade.
