Owner A.J. Varma said he had been working to partner with Cold Stone Creamery for a while, and now the deal is coming to fruition. After pulling an all-nighter Wednesday with 15 employees to get everything set up, the ice cream will be ready to order this evening. Keeping everything clean in the process was also of the utmost concern.
"In the food business you have to be very careful that there's not contamination of any kind. And now we're making ice cream like crazy," Varma said. "My son and I have been working around the clock."
The new arrangement took Varma's son and the store's general manager out to Arizona -- where Cold Stone is based -- for training in running an ice cream operation. But the hybrid of Cold Stone and Tim Hortons presents an entirely new set of possibilities to blend the shop's baked goods into ice cream concoctions.
"Soon we'll have a full selection of Cold Stone ice cream, but right now we're offering about 15 varieties," Varma said. "But there are many baked products that can be mixed into the ice cream and it's very interesting. While we're preparing everything, I've been learning myself."
Frozen treats will be available at the drive-thru window and are served for all the hours the store is open. Varma said the concept has taken off at similar locations in Hamburg and Jamestown. He's hopeful his first venture in that direction will be only the first for his five Tim Hortons locations.
While he's optimistic about his chances, local closings of Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks locations also have him wary. But the freezers and ice cream scoops are ready, and now it's up to the consumer to decide whether ice cream, doughnuts and coffee go together. Varma is convinced they will approve.
"It's a lovely concept," he said.
