Kidnapping, firearm charges filed against Darien bank robbery suspects: The men are accused of robbing a Darien bank this week.
HBDA | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Authorities have filed kidnapping, firearm and other state charges against three men accused of robbing a Darien bank this week.
Michael David Palmer, 50, of Miami, his stepson, Alfredo Germain Mason, 20, of Opa-Locka, and his friend, Aaron Jermaine Jackson, 19, of West Palm Beach, are accused of robbing Heritage Bank at gunpoint shortly before 12:30 p.m. Monday.
FBI Special Agent Tony Alig said more charges were filed Friday against each of them by McIntosh County sheriff's detectives in the continuing investigation.
All three are charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Palmer and Jackson also are charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Alig said.
Alig said the case will be presented to a federal grand jury for consideration of conspiracy, armed bank robbery and firearm charges next month.
Three men brandishing guns took over the bank and ordered customers and employees onto the floor. Two of the robbers jumped over the teller counter and took an undisclosed amount of money from drawers.
Fleeing in a rented Kia van, the robbers led Darien police and McIntosh sheriff's deputies on a chase that ended when the van crashed on U.S. 17 south of Eulonia. Deputies arrested Mason and Jackson immediately, but Palmer eluded a manhunt until he surrendered Tuesday when the FBI and McIntosh detectives tracked him to his daughter's home in Brunswick.
A rifle, handgun and most of the bank's money were recovered following the crash, Alig said.
A Darien native, Palmer has a criminal record dating back to 1982, including convictions for theft by receiving stolen property, trafficking in narcotics and possession of narcotics-opiates, Georgia Department of Corrections Records showed.
Palmer was released from prison Aug. 12, 1992, after serving about six years of a 10-year sentence on the drug trafficking charge, according to the records.
Jackson was convicted of possession of cocaine in Palm Beach County last year. He was sentenced to a year and six months of probation in the case, Florida Department of Corrections records showed.
