By contrast, the company's revenue decreased to EUR1.26bn from EUR1.425bn. The operating profit rose to EUR79.5m from EUR72.3m and the pretax profit went up to EUR47.8m from EUR47.5m. The EPS went up to EUR0.28 from EUR0.27.
Kemira's revenue and net profit for the second quarter of 2009 showed similar trends as the ones for the first half of 2009. The revenue dropped to EUR650.9m from EUR741.5 in the second quarter of 2008 while the net profit grew to EUR29.5m from EUR18.9m.
The company said that its revenue for the April - June 2009 period was positively impacted by EUR19m from acquisitions and negatively by EUR15m from currency exchange effects. Moreover, the set-up of a joint venture in the titanium dioxide business in 2008 decreased the revenue in the period under review by some EUR55m.
Kemira expects its revenue for the whole 2009 to fall compared to 2008 due to reduced demand in customer industries, particularly in paints, and in pulp and paper chemicals. Nevertheless, it estimates that its operating profit in continuing business operations, excluding non-recurring items, will increase from the EUR126.3m for 2008.
