It has seen sales of its Carex hand gels soar 200pc since May as Britons rush to clean themselves in a flight to hygiene. Finance director Brandon Leigh said concerns over swine flu had seen Britons "generally become more sensible" about hygiene. "A lot of families already have antibacterial soap in the home, but with the heightened awareness of hygiene, they want the same protection out of the home as well," he said. The firm, which also makes the Sanctuary Spa range and is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, posted a 16pc rise in full-year profits, up from GBP76m to GBP84m. It said total sales rose 27pc to GBP838.1m, with underlying sales up 7.5pc, excluding Sanctuary, which was only bought last year. The shares fell 11 1/4p to 223 3/4p after Lee warned that conditions were fragile. It has revived its range of products, launching Imperial Leather Skin Bliss and has cemented its position as the UK's leading "personal wash" brand.
