Track President Doug Fritz confirmed this afternoon that officials for IRL and the track's parent company, International Speedway Corp., could not reach an agreement to add the SunTrust Indy Challenge on the 2010 schedule. Fritz said the economic downturn played a significant role in ISC's decision. In addition, criticism of last month's race by both drivers and fans jeopardized an event along with dwindling attendance and the likely loss of sponsors, including SunTrust Bank. "Given the unprecedented challenging economic conditions facing all businesses, we at Richmond International Raceway, in partnership with our parent company International Speedway Corporation, have been closely reviewing our portfolio of events," Fritz said "Key factors of the review include prioritization of promotional spends, track resources and efforts, along with fan and industry feedback." The feedback was largely negative after Scott Dixon won the June 26 race for the second time at RIR by finishing ahead of his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate and pole-sitter Dario Franchitti. "After reviewing those key factors and due to increases in cost, including IndyCar Series fees to host an event, we have made the decision, in conjunction with ISC, to not host the IndyCar event at Richmond International Raceway in 2010," Fritz said. "This was a very difficult decision but given all the factors considered, one that we're confident will help us to continue providing the best entertainment for our guests, while at the same time meet immediate needs to position Richmond for long-term success. "The IndyCar Series is a high-quality racing series and we have enjoyed hosting them at Richmond International Raceway. The series puts on good shows all over the world, but here at Richmond we just didn't have the racing that our fans have come to expect. Nonetheless, the IndyCar Series continues to run entertaining events at other venues and we wish them all the best for the future."
