DERBY, Aug 04, 2009 (Connecticut Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- CELPE | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Man and nature clashed Monday afternoon when a young deer found itself caught in a canal with no way out.

Local police, state Department of Environmental Protection police and Derby firefighters converged Monday afternoon around 3 p.m. on Canal Street by the former Derby Cellular Products to come to the aid of the panic-stricken deer stuck in the canal.

The spotted white-tailed deer ran back and forth in the water, crisscrossing the canal that runs along Roosevelt Drive across from Apollo Pizza as DEP officers chased it with nets in the water.

The canal is about 20 feet wide and the water is about waist deep. But since it is about 10 feet below the road, the deer, which was clearly very young, could not get out without the help of the emergency personnel.

A large Caterpillar excavator that was on site doing work on the canal's dam was used to lower an inflatable raft down into the canal that the DEP officers used to row in pursuit of the deer. At one point the deer was near the sandbag dam, but managed to escape the nets and ran down the waterway.

The officers followed, rowing the raft down the canal, and about 10 minutes later emerged, one officer in the raft with the deer in his arms and the others pushing the pair. After tying its legs, the officer carried the deer up the ladder, out of the canal and into the bed of a waiting DEP pickup truck, which whisked it off to nearby Osbourndale State Park, where it was to be

released.

The deer appeared to be no worse for wear.

"I have no idea how it got in there," one officer said.

"Maybe he was hot and wanted to go for a swim," one bystander said.
