Herman Miller is an office furniture and equipment manufacturer.
Henrico County-based Chasen's was one of the largest office furniture dealers in the mid-Atlantic.
Larry Giancaterino, chairman and CEO of Chasen's, did not return several e-mails and phone calls. The company's Web site was down yesterday, but the voicemail system was still in operation.
In addition to its headquarters on Forest Avenue, Chasen's had offices in Alexandria, Norfolk and Charlottesville. It operated warehouses on Dabney Road in Henrico and in Norfolk.
Chasen's, which had operated for 30 years, had about 130 workers. It was not affiliated with the Richmond-based painting contractor N. Chasen & Son Inc. or Chasen Galleries in Richmond.
Baltimore-based American Office already has hired 25 employees and will be adding an additional 25 over the next several months.
David Kuntz, president of American Office, said the company has talked to several former Chasen's employees about joining the company. "We are thrilled with their level of expertise," he said.
Kuntz said the market expansion was an easy decision to make.
"Because of our current organization, this is a natural growth for us," he said.
American Office has four sales offices and two distribution centers in Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington.
American Office works with commercial, government and health-care clients.
Because of the expansion, it will add three offices. American Office has opened temporary offices in Henrico County and in Hampton Roads, and it is looking for temporary space in Charlottesville.
While taking over the territory once operated by Chasen's, American Office isn't taking over Chasen's accounts or the company, Kuntz said.
"Herman Miller has been working with customers who have existing orders through Chasen's," said Susan Koole, a spokeswoman for Herman Miller. "Going forward we will be introducing them to American Office as the dealer representing their area."
