Gatte is the new director of Telos Academy, an educational program of Mindworks Learning Institute.
Located at 5350 Spectrum Drive, Telos Academy is designed for home-schooled students in grades six through 10.
"We look at children as what they will become," said Ben Douds, assistant director. "You can't judge the acorn at the present, only what it will become, an oak tree."
Classes are small, usually only five children, Gatte said. That way the instructor can work with each student on their needs. And there is respect among the students for each other, Gatte said.
"In a public school, a teacher couldn't spend the time with one student," she said.
One of the keys to that education, is to encourage students to learn in a way relevant to them, Gatte said. "You need to take things out of the textbook. Textbooks can be boring. We want children to strive to find the meaning in what they learn as an individual."
Douds said the academy connects a lot with the home-school community.
"We've had picnics and even an astronomy class," Douds said.
Gatte, a resident of New Market , holds degrees from St. Thomas Aquinas College and Penn State University. She has taught for more than 10 years at secondary and college levels.
"As a college professor, I saw how for high school students, critical thinking was not up to par," Gatte said. "To work well on the college level, students need to be independent learners."
Classes are given four days a week, with specific classes two days per week. Subjects range from mathematics, English, critical thinking, science, history, Spanish, Latin and others.
