Anadys Pharmaceuticals Announced Hepatitis C Drug May Be Effective (ANDS)

Aug 11, 2009 (SmarTrend(R) News Watch via COMTEX) -- ANDS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- 8/11/2009 - Anadys Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ANDS) announced Tuesday its hepatitis C drug candidate ANA-773 may be extremely effective. The statement came after early-stage data, which is generally only accurate for studying safety, showed the drug candidate was overwhelmingly superior at reducing the virus in patients compared to those taking the placebo. Later studies will be necessary to determine whether the drug is actually that effective at treating hepatitis C. President and CEO Steve Worland said, "ANA773 has demonstrated a significant short-term antiviral response in HCV patients, comparable to many historical reports of interferon as a single agent. Given its oral delivery and favorable tolerability profile to date, we believe that ANA773 holds promise as a potential replacement for injectable interferon products in hepatitis C therapy."
