Nippon Meat Packers Inc. (TSE:2282) subsidiary Shizuoka Nippon Ham Co. completed inspection of its ham and sausage factory and was able to resume normal operations Wednesday. Parcel delivery companies were able to continue by detouring around the closed portion of the Tomei Expressway.
But Toshiba Corp. (TSE:6502) subsidiary Hamaoka Toshiba Electronics Corp. discovered damage to some equipment at its factory making light-emitting diodes. The company initially thought it could resume operations on Wednesday , but it is now repairing the damage and has not said when the LED factory will start up again.
Similarly, major U.S. glassmaker Corning Inc. has had to halt operations at its factory making glass substrates for LCD panels, with no set date for resumption. In the meantime, the company will use its production base in Taiwan to supply glass to its clients in Japan. The change is not expected to have any impact on the production operations of Corning's main client Sharp Corp. (TSE:6753).
