Commission Chairman Frances Garcia joined in voting for the more strongly worded version that IdeaTek's president, Daniel Friesen, had submitted, although she had expressed reservations the day earlier about issuing such a letter for one company when another, US Cellular, also is eyeing the same federal aid.
County staff made only minor grammatical and punctuation changes to Friesen's letter.
In other county matters this week:
--County Counselor Joe O'Sullivan said commissioners probably will see next week a proposed contract with Siemens Wind Energy for its planned plant. Commissioners could vote Aug. 26 on the county's financial commitment to the project.
--Only a Nebraska company submitted a bid, of nearly $400,000, to expand the leachate pond at the county landfill. Commissioners will vote on the issue Aug. 26.
--Human Resources Director Renee Harris said employee turnover is down for the county, speculating that the tight job market is a contributing factor. There was a 25 percent turnover rate in the last couple of years, but the turnover rate now is under 17 percent. Most of the 43 people who left their county jobs during 2009 resigned or retired.
--There probably will be fewer worker injury incidents this year, compared to 2007, when 67 cases were reported. However, the severity of incidents will result in higher worker compensation costs for the county in 2010, Harris noted.
