Applicants for the Step 1 level award are known to have a clear vision and mission for their center and acknowledge key challenges embodied in the organizational profile section of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the premier national award recognizing outstanding and distinguished achievements. Specifically, the Step I award recognizes providers that have developed a foundation to begin a journey of continuous quality improvement, and taking the first step in corresponding with public measures of performance. Since the Step I Quality Award's inception, approximately 1,500 facilities from a pool of more than 4,000 applicants have received this national recognition. "We applaud these centers for having passed this first step that demonstrates their intention to being a rigorous quality improvement program, and we look forward to their moving forward to pursue the requirements for the Steps II and III awards in the coming year," stated Bernie Dana, Chair, AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers, one of the nine members leading the initiative.
