Monitoring by the county Air Pollution Control District shows that northwesterly winds are blowing smoke and ash into the north and central parts of the county from the Lockheed Fire in Santa Cruz County.
Meanwhile, the La Brea Fire east of Santa Maria is expected to bring more smoke and ash into the South County near the middle of next week as winds are expected to shift and begin blowing from the south.
"Changing winds and weather conditions make it difficult to predict which areas of the county may be most affected," Larry Allen, county air pollution control officer. "However, until the fires are put out, smoke and ash will likely be intermittently present in our area for what may be days to come."
County residents are advised to reduce their exposure to the particulates in the air by limiting outdoor activities. Up-to-date information about air quality can be obtained by visiting the Web site at
