Barbara Wright, executive director of the East End United Community Center, said the idea of having a countywide talent show came up after an Easter fashion show, when the subject of the hit television show, American Idol, came about.
"Everyone was talking about it," Wright said. "They thought we should have a talent contest for the community and a fundraiser."
Replicating the contest after such programs as "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent," each entertainer performed in front of three judges.
Last week's audition was closed, so it was just the performer and the three judges, including Wright, Mark Wasler from Kingfish Worldwide Inc., an entertainment production company in Uniontown, and Jerry Burden, a New York City talent contest judge.
Wright said they were looking for an act's stage presence and the professionalism of his or her performance.
Not counting walk-ins, Wright said there were 25 contestants registered, including dancers, dance groups, singers, bands and comedians.
Fifteen acts received golden tickets that allow them to perform in the "Uniontown's Got Talent" show in the State Theatre 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10, when a fourth, still unnamed, celebrity judge will be added.
A program book will be available and Wright is looking for a business or entity to sponsor to underwrite the project.
The winner of the final show in October will receive $500 cash.
"I hope the winner would try a national competition," Wright said. She gives credit to Kelly Jenkins for coming up with the format of the talent show.
A portion of the ticket sales of the October event will go toward the Caring Corner program, which helps families deal with a death in the family.
Wright said she hopes to make "Uniontown's Got Talent," which is open to everyone in Fayette County, an annual event.
