BRIEF: Trip to Africa opens eyes for Rep. Steve Cohen

WASHINGTON, Aug 19, 2009 (The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
FDX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., checked in this morning from Accra, Ghana, and reported seeing FedEx billboards and signs hailing the recent visit of President Obama.

Cohen is on a congressional delegation fact-finding trip to Africa and has already visited Liberia, which he described as "very, very poor and war-ravaged." In Liberia, he met with the President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

Cohen noted that the parts of West Africa he has visited have an infant mortality problem similar to the one in the 9th Congressional District but said Liberia has only 200 medical doctors in the country. He witnessed "shanties" where pregnant women go to give birth.

The visit by the delegation made the news in Ghana's main newspaper, The Daily Graphic, which reported on assurances it made of additional U.S. investment in the country.

Cohen is en route to South Africa and will also visit Angola. He returns to Memphis on Monday.
