The cigarette giant announced Richard Burrows will take over from Jan du Plessis, who leaves to chair Rio Tinto in November.
Burrows was forced to resign as governor of the Bank of Ireland last month because of its dismal performance during the downturn.
He had to apologise to investors for the falling profits and share price. But the tobacco firm said it was hiring him for his skills built up with drinks firm Pernod Ricard.
He is credited with transforming Jameson Whisky into an international brand and he also sits on the boards of Carlsberg and Rentokil.
At BAT (down 33p to 1867p) he will receive GBP525,000 to work two days a week. His appointment marks a resurgence in bankers finding corporate positions.
