Competing in just his second event since his stunning loss at this year's French Open and subsequent withdrawal from Wimbledon due to knee tendonitis, Nadal showed further signs of a return to form Thursday evening.
The Spaniard fell behind early in the match 3-0, but then quickly cut down on his unforced errors and showed off some of his trademark spectacular defense to break back and then regain the lead late in the first set.
The 23-year-old Nadal eventually took that set 7-5 when Mathieu missed an easy forehand on set point and then played at close to his best level the rest of the way to run his career mark against the Frenchman to 9-0.
"I was very pleased with my performance," the world No. 3 said. "I think I played much better than yesterday," referring to his first-round win over Italy's Andreas Seppi.
Nadal will next take on the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych, who defeated Australia's Chris Guccione 6-4, 6-3.
In another match Thursday involving a Spanish player, Guillermo Garcia Lopez lost a close contest against Frenchman Julien Benneteau 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The Western & Southern Financial Group Masters is one of nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events, which rank just below the four Grand Slams and the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in terms of ranking points and prestige. EFE
