Contractors installing a guard rail at the Vernon Avenue onramp to the east 210 struck and broke a 4-inch gas pipe at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, Southern California Gas Co. spokesman Raul Gordillo said.
The leak wasn't stopped until 5:10 a.m, and traffic backed up to Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena, CHP officers said.
"This leak was on a freeway so it made it a little bit more difficult to go in there and get it repaired," Gordillo said. "Luckily, nobody was injured. The most important thing is the safety of our customers and the workers."
A Sig Alert was issued at 5:01 a.m. when CHP officials anticipated shutting down both directions of the freeway due to the gas leak, CHP officer Edmund Zorrilla said.
"You know that would have been a nightmare," he said.
Instead, the gas company advised them only two lanes on the east 210 freeway needed to be closed and some traffic was diverted to the south 605 freeway, Zorrilla said.
The east 10 freeway, which many commuters used as an alternate route, was slower than normal Friday morning.
The right lane east 210 east and the Vernon Avenue on/offramp in Azusa remained closed until about noon Friday.
There were no evacuations as a result of the leak, Zorrilla said.
Nine homes lost gas service.
