Instead, the 16,000-square-foot outlet at 6502 Pacific Ave. has been converted to one of the company's Cash & Carry stores, aimed squarely at restaurants and other food service businesses.
While Smart & Final stores cater to both consumers and businesses with a mix of individual and large-volume packaging, Cash & Carry is more directed to the restaurant supply business, company spokesman Randall Oliver said.
"Sizes are typically quite large. Meat is sold in large, primal cuts. Produce is sold by the case. It is much more institutional than what you will find at a Smart & Final store," he wrote in an e-mail.
The Stockton outlet becomes one of more than 50 Cash & Carry stores in four Western states, including locations in Modesto, Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose and San Francisco.
"We have been looking at the Stockton market for several years. We are excited about the opportunity to service the food service customers in this area," said Marty Trtek, president of Cash & Carry, which is based in Portland, Ore.
