PowerRating -- 8/30/2009 - AstraZeneca Plc's (NYSE:AZN) blood thinner Brilinta proved to be more effective than Sanofi-Aventis SA (NYSE:SNY) and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.'s (NYSE:BMY) Plavix in a study. The drug prevented 16% more heart attacks, strokes, and deaths. The findings position Brilinta to rival Plavix, which is the second-biggest selling medicine in the world and brings in almost $10 million in revenue per year. There are about 1.3 million Americans hospitalized each year with heart attacks and chest pain known as acute coronary syndromes. Aspirin and Plavix have lowered their subsequent health risks but cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide. A cardiologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit said in an interview, "I think this will become the new standard of care. It's more rapid, more effective and it appears to be safer," than Plavix and Effient, which is from Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE:LLY). He added, "I don't think they could have done much better than they did in this trial."
