For the sixth consecutive year, Bell Aliant employees, retirees and Pioneer Volunteers have stepped up with the "Backpacks for Kids" program to help needy families and children get the right start as they head back to school. This year, over 3,100 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to children in communities throughout Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Quebec.
The Bell Aliant "Backpacks for Kids" program has resulted in 12,000 backpacks being filled and distributed since it began in 2003.
"The success of the "Backpacks for Kids" program demonstrates the commitment of our employees, retirees and Pioneer Volunteers to their communities," said Karen Sheriff, President & Chief Executive Officer. "It is through their generous effort that thousands of children will start their school year on an equal footing with their classmates."
Volunteers have already begun distribution of the backpacks to more than one hundred schools and community groups so that children will receive them prior to their first day of school.
Each year, Bell Aliant purchases the backpacks, and its employees, retirees and volunteers purchase supplies to fill them. The Pioneer Volunteers distribute the filled backpacks to schools and community groups across the region.
