SHANGHAI, Sep 02, 2009 (Dow Jones Commodities News Select via Comtex) --
HVYM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- China's Ministry of Environmental Protection approved in principle a program to regulate heavy metal pollution in the wake of two lead poisoning incidents in Shaanxi and Hunan provinces, the China Environmental News reported Wednesday.

The program is now in the draft stages and will take into account suggestions from relevant authorities before approval by the State Council, the report said, citing statements from the ministry's regular meeting last week.

The ministry also approved proposals for the protection of drinking water sources in cities, the report said.
