Joy Sticks, located in the former Shoney's restaurant off Bellefontaine Avenue, opened Tuesday, offering a menu Manager Tim Mayer calls "Big-city sandwiches in a small-town atmosphere."
The restaurant features pool tables and an array of sandwiches, including some decidedly regional favorites, such as a New York reuben, a Philadelphia steak sandwich and a catfish po' boy reminiscent of a New Orleans favorite.
"Basically, they're the kind of sandwiches you really can't get unless you go to a bigger city," Mayer said.
Priced around $9 a plate, the sandwiches cost a bit more than in some spots, but the quality and size makes it a deal, Mayer said.
"Everything's big. That's our thing. People are going to get their money's worth," Mayer said.
The business's owner, Kathryn Lewis, is taking a chance on a space that, despite its proximity to Interstae 75, has seen its share of failure.
The location has housed a number of restaurants in recent years, including a satellite version of the popular Huddle restaurant, a couple of Mexican restaurants and a pizza place. Mayer has faith Joy Sticks will be the one to make good.
"You've got 25,000 people driving past here every day. There's no reason we can't make it," Mayer said.
