QuickPlay Media Consumption Analysis Reveals Strong Consumer Demand for Premium Mobile Video Services in Q2 2009

TORONTO, Sep 03, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- VS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- QuickPlay Media, the premier provider of solutions that manage the business of mobile video, today unveiled the findings of its latest quarterly consumer consumption analysis. The results--aggregate usage statistics from 17 representative QuickPlay-powered services including two which launched in the second quarter of 2009--revealed a rise in consumer demand for video downloads as well as a sharp increase in average length of stream views.

The latest findings, compiled between April 1 and June 30, 2009, showed an increase in total video downloads and average downloads per user over the previous quarter. The increase in total downloads was driven in part by the release of PrimeTime2Go(TM), a premium mobile TV service featuring full episodes of TV shows from leading networks such as ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN and MTVN.

Meanwhile, the results revealed that consumers of streaming video are watching content in longer sessions. While the total number of TV and video streams and the average streams per user were down slightly, there was a notable jump in the length of time spent viewing each individual stream.

For streaming audio, the findings demonstrated a growing interest in premium mobile audio services as evidenced by the rise in total audio streams consumed over the quarter. This growth is attributable to the extremely successful launch of the SIRIUS XM Radio application for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The SIRIUS XM Radio application enables SIRIUS XM internet customers to enjoy more than 120 popular, commercial-free music, premier sports, news, talk, entertainment, and traffic and weather channels on their mobile devices. Powered by QuickPlay's OpenVideo(TM) platform, the application has been downloaded by more than one million consumers since its release in June.

Specific numbers reported in the latest quarterly analysis are highlighted below.

Video Downloads

-- Total number of video downloads showed a significant increase of 28.4% from Q1 2009 to Q2 2009

-- Average downloads per user rose from 6.3 in Q1 2009 to 7.9 in Q2 2009

Video & Audio Streams

-- Total number of TV and video streams decreased by 5.1% from Q1 2009 to Q2 2009

-- Average streams per user decreased from 15.7 in Q1 2009 to 14.2 in Q2 2009

-- Total streaming average event duration rose significantly from two minutes and 29 seconds in Q1 2009 to just under three minutes (two minutes and 59 seconds) in Q2 2009

Other findings:

-- The most popular video download genres were music followed by movie previews and sports.

-- For live TV streams, the top preferences were news, kids' entertainment and sports, while video stream favorites included user-generated content, sports and news.

-- For audio, the top streaming genres included pop, rock and comedy

"It was another good quarter for mobile media, especially in the premium content services category," said Wayne Purboo, president and CEO, QuickPlay Media. "As a team, we are committed to encouraging this demand by continuing to launch an array of content and feature-rich services that transform smartphones into primary sources of entertainment."

"Flexibility and customization are essential components of any media service today," said Susan Kevorkian, program director, Digital Marketplace, at IDC. "Services with those qualities, and companies like QuickPlay that offer them, will be best positioned to attract and retain consumers over the long term."
