Mission light welterweight Raul Tovar (6-1, two knockouts) is set to box on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez show Sept. 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, while Brownsville bantamweight Sergio Perales (11-0, six KOs) is scheduled to fight Sept. 12 on the undercard of a show at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.
Tovar welcomes the challenge of facing Jesse Vargas (5-0, two KOs) of Las Vegas in a six-round matchup.
"This is definitely monumental for me to fight in the presence of (boxing) legends," Tovar said. "It's pretty exciting. I'm fighting this guy in his hometown, so I want to make a statement with my power and do well for the Valley."
Added promoter Anthony Cavazos, who helped arrange the bout, "It's just an awesome thing for Raul to be a part of the biggest boxing event of the year."
Perales, who defeated Kevin Hudgins of Florida on a first-round technical knockout Aug. 22 at Brownsville Sports Park, now faces Californian Jose Pacheco (2-7-6) in a four-rounder at the Playboy Mansion, a much-publicized location not exactly known for its boxing events.
Robert Campos, Perales' trainer, said he has been told his fighter will box in the match just before the main and co-main events.
"We're scheduled to fight on the card already," Campos said. "We're just waiting for them to give us the green light (to go to California). We're going to go a few days early so Sergio can get his license to fight there."
UPDATES
Weslaco light welterweight Omar "Panterita" Figueroa (7-0, seven KOs) last week received a contract offer from Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, said Omar Figueroa Sr., the fighter's father and manager. As of the weekend, it appeared the two sides were still negotiating a deal. Figueroa Sr. said he wants to work out the best possible arrangement for his son.
Harlingen welterweight James De La Rosa (19-0, 12 KOs) is scheduled to fight on a Don King show Oct. 31 at a location to be announced. The card could possibly air on Showtime or a pay-per-view telecast.
Harlingen middleweight J.P. "Juan" De La Rosa (20-3-1, 15 KOs), James' older brother, travels to Houston this week to help out as a sparring partner for former WBC super middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KOs), who is preparing for his next fight Oct. 17 in Germany.
Brownsville super flyweight Jerry Guevara (1-0, one KO) has waited more than nine months for his second pro fight. It could happen soon as it appears he may be fighting Sept. 18 in California.
