Plans are under way for the annual chili cook-off. Sponsored by the Polo Chamber of Commerce, the event will be held on Division Avenue, directly across the street from First State Bank of Shannon-Polo-Lake Carroll.
Cooking will begin at 8 a.m., with the tasting to start at noon. Trophies will be awarded for People's Choice, Judge's Choice, Showmanship and Hottest Chili. Blind judging will be done this year.
Sauk Valley Newspapers Food Editor Grace Whitten will serve as one of the judges.
Registration forms are available at First State Bank, Jeff's Refs, and Polo Shell Express Lane. Registrations must be turned in to Lori Galor at the bank by 4 p.m. on Sept. 22.
Proceeds from this year's event will benefit the Cassidy Terry Fund set up to assist with medical expenses.
Terry, 16, of Polo, was diagnosed with leukemia in February and recently underwent a bone marrow transplant. A bone marrow drive also will be held for her.
Polo's third annual blood drive will be at the same time and location as the chili cook-off, in honor of Larry Lannen, who was a frequent blood donor in Polo for many years, according to Galor, who said the late Lannen never missed the chili cook-off in Polo.
