JSW & Buhler Machinery Ltd., a joint venture the companies established last year, has come up with a die-casting machine as the first fruits of their partnership. The large machine, which can mold even thin parts, will be manufactured at Japan Steel Works' Hiroshima plant.
Key parts, such as the device for injecting the aluminum, will be procured from Buhler and will be assembled with a die-fastening device and control equipment. A technical center set up last October at the Hiroshima factory will provide technical assistance to customers to help generate orders.
Die-casting machines will be supplied to firms that produce autoparts such as engine blocks and transmission cases. Initial production will be several units a month, with a goal of capturing a 10 per cent domestic market share in 2012 and realizing five billion yen (US$54.3 million) in sales in 2013.
Demand for autoparts made of aluminum alloys is expected to increase as carmakers seek lighter parts for hybrid cars and other vehicles.
