September is Library Card Sign-up Month and anyone signing up for a library card will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
In addition, First Regional Library is waiving the $1 replacement fee for anyone who has lost their library card.
"There is a lot happening at the library, and the best part of it is that it's all free with a library card," said Catherine Nathan, First Regional Library Director.
Anyone of any age that lives in DeSoto, Lafayette, Panola, Tate or Tunica counties can receive a First Regional Library card with a valid form of identification.
Nathan has been making the rounds to the city and county governments the library serves to get her funding in line for 2010.
On Tuesday, she presented DeSoto County Supervisors with numbers from the Mississippi Library Commission showing the county's libraries were by far the most used in the state. In 2008, 717,659 items were checked out of DeSoto County's five library branches.
"We are well used and certainly well appreciated by the people of DeSoto County," Nathan said.
The next closest was Hinds County, with 460,105 items, and Nathan noted that there are 14 branches of the library in the Jackson area.
"People are moving to DeSoto County with their 2.5 children who are in school, and they are discovering we have a wonderful library system," Nathan said. "A library card has always been the most important school supply of all."
Nathan said there are a lot of retirees in DeSoto County who use the library as well.
"We have a lot seniors who use our branches for both Internet access and for their leisure reading," Nathan said. "The retirees in our community are very active in our programming."
