At 8:57 a.m., one of the motors in a ventilation system at the high school seized and caused a discharge of smoke into the gymnasium and rotunda, said First Assistant Fire Chief Bill Nicoletti.
The school was evacuated, he said.
"We were able to pinpoint the origin and cut the power" and vent the smoke from the building, he added. "We were on the scene for about 45 minutes."
Shortly after returning to service, a call came in about a fire at Derby Cellular Products, he said.
"We had a small fire in the ventilation pipes from one of the ovens," he said, adding the company, on Roosevelt Drive, makes rubber products and the exhaust from the ovens contains rubber which can build up, causing a fire.
That building was also evacuated, he said, adding there was "only minor damage" done.
He said that fire was under control within 20 minutes.
