Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp. will comply with steps outlined by the New York Police Department to make sure its gimmick will not cause alarm, especially in the wake of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the New York Post reported.
Burlington plans to place 500 tote bags, each with a gift card worth as much as $500 and a message on the bag's exterior announcing it as a gift from the company, in cafes, stores, and restaurants in lower Manhattan Wednesday and Thursday.
The stunt will promote the kickoff of the company's "store in a store" concept, a Burlington representative said.
Store officials said they have been in contact with the NYPD and have agreed to keep the bags off public property. The bags, to be placed on private property and authorized ahead of time by management, will be monitored by marketing crews.
