Consultant Laurie Andrews said Wayne Winters of Delaware, who was officially hired by the transit board Thursday, e-mailed her Monday morning to reject the job.
"He sent me an e-mail that said he changed his mind and was no longer interested in the position," Andrews said.
The hiring was to be the last step for consultants Andrews and Lynn Colosi, who have been working with Town and Country since February after it was discovered that the agency was in significant debt. The board has since approved measures recommended by the consultants to increase revenue and streamline operations.
Yesterday's start date for Winters was to begin two weeks of meetings with local leaders and updates on Town and Country's status before the consultants' contract expires Sept. 30.
The consultants and board had said Winters is experienced in transportation and was expected to be a good fit for the position vacated by former general manager Michael Johnston in February.
About 80 applications for the position were received, and the board and consultants spent the summer interviewing candidates. The board has been in negotiations with the preferred candidate for several weeks.
Board president Henry Mores said he hasn't had a chance to talk with the consultants about the situation. The board will weigh its options at its regular meeting this afternoon.
