The ministry said that the supplies will come from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and the vaccines are expected for delivery by the end of this year.
The ministry said that this is part of the phased and diversified approach in securing a sufficient quantity of the vaccine for the population.
"Large scale vaccination, on a voluntary basis, will commence once we are satisfied with the safety and efficacy reviews of this vaccine, currently being undertaken internationally," the ministry said, adding that it is closely watching experiences from other countries which have launched or announced plans to conduct mass vaccinations for their people.
The ministry said that it will reserve part of the supply for essential personnel, including those in the healthcare sector. The cost of the GSK vaccine is comparable to the cost of normal seasonal flu vaccine.
The ministry said that the GSK contract should meet the immediate needs, adding that it has an existing contract with Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL) Australia Pte Ltd for further supplies of H1N1 vaccines.
Singapore reported its first confirmed case of flu A/H1N1 on May 27. The flu has caused 18 deaths in the country.
